Former Trinamool Congress MP, Ahmed Hasan Imran, finds himself embroiled in controversy once again as the Mamata Banerjee-led government appoints him as the chairman of the Minorities Commission.
The Bengal BJP has strongly criticized this decision, alleging Imran's involvement in anti-national activities. However, the Trinamool Congress has vehemently defended Imran against these accusations.
The state BJP has taken its protest against Imran's appointment to the Governor and the central government. They have written letters to Governor CV Anand Bose, as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Women and Child Welfare Minister Smriti Irani, expressing their objections.
State BJP Minority Morcha President, Charles Nandi, also took to Twitter to voice his opposition to Imran's appointment. He accused Imran of having ties with terrorist organizations and questioned the state government's decision to appoint him as the Chairman of the Minorities Commission. Nandi referred to a report submitted by the Bangladesh government to the Union Home Ministry, which raised concerns about Imran's activities.
It is noteworthy that Imran was previously appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the Trinamool Congress in 2014. Back then, the BJP had opposed his appointment, making allegations of anti-national activities against him. The central government had also made various claims against Imran regarding his alleged involvement with banned organizations like the Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
Imran has admitted to being associated with SIMI in the past but maintained that he severed ties with the organization after it was banned by the Center. However, BJP leaders claim that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has gathered evidence linking Imran to these organizations.
